December 6, 2011 Comments off

Image

December is bringing some Dungeons & Dragons fun to TJ’s. Every Wednesday night, we have a group of adventurers gather in the game room for some D&D adventuring. Currently, there are three different D&D campaigns in the works:

D&D Encounters: Beyond the Crystal Cave takes place every other Wednesday night from 7-9pm. This week, 12/7, we’ll continue the adventure in the Feywild.

Home Campaign: If you’re not into Encounters, then don’t worry. We have several excellent DM’s here, and the current house campaign DM’d by Steven O’Neil, is proving to be fun, challenging, and quite exciting! Right now, our 6th level adventurers are awaiting the battle for the city of Rockhaven. Will we all survive?

D&D Lair Assault: Talon of Umberlee is the second adventure in the Lair Asault series. This is an 8th level encounter, and if the first Lair Assault adventure is any indication, will prove to be most challenging. DM David Payne is preparing the campaign for a date in the very near future. Fore more Lair Assault info, click here.

If you’re in the neighborhood on Wednesday nights and looking to get your D&D fix, stop in and visit! We’d love to see you!

WotC Explains “ARG’s,” in “Re: Josh Brauer”

October 24, 2011 Comments off

In an article on Monday, senior Wizards game designer Ryan Miller discusses an odd story-based campaign that explains as an Alternate-Reality Game. Apparently, what they did was create a story and spread the clues around their website for would be adventurers to locate. In addition, they apparently mailed content to Magic players via the postal service as well.

Kind of an odd, if risky and costly, move to promote Innistrad.

What do you think? Did the ARG’s of Innistrad have any meaningful impact for you? Sound off and comment below!

Busy weekend in the Magic the Gathering community, with both Grand Prix Amsterdam (Legacy) and Grand Prix Santiago (Brazil) having took place and each crowned a champion!

In Amsterdam, 1,878 Grand Prix champion hopefuls sleeved up their Legacy decks and did battle. Only Pierre Sommen of France stood alone after the dust settled, piloting his Bant deck featuring Stoneforge Mystic, Knight of the Reliquary and a host of powerful blue cards like Force of Will and Jace, the Mind Sculptor to defeat Ciro Bonaventura, piloting a RUG Tempo deck with Delver of Secrets (!) two games to one.

On the other side of the world, there was a Grand Prix of an entirely different flavor in Santiago, Brazil. This time, 737 players registered to do battle with Innistrad sealed deck. Despite a star-studded top eight including Owen Turtenwald, Paulo Vitor Damo de Rosa (PVDDR), Martin Juza and New England’s own Melissa DeTora (congrats Melissa!), only one champion could be crowned and that champion is Igor Silva Pinto!

Interestingly enough, this event also featuring a number of player disqualifications, including one high profile DQ that involved a player in the top eight. You can read the Head Judge’s statement regarding this incident, here.

“Magic” & “Transformers” Help Hasbro

October 18, 2011 Comments off

Hasbro, parent company of Wizards of the Coast – makers of popular collectible card game Magic the Gathering – reports that its third quarter profit is up 10% compared to the same time period a year ago, according to ICv2.com. However, while sales were reportedly off by 7% in the United States and Canada, stronger international sales provided the revenue for such growth.

It seems these latest earnings reports were driven by two things: Transformers and Magic: the Gathering. Sales for Hasbro’s “Toys for Boys” category grew by 15% and reached $534.6 million on the strength of Transformers and the Marvel Studios toys from both Thor and Captain America. Meanwhile, sales for the “Toys for Girls” category declined by 4% to $259.1 million.

Additionally, sales of “puzzles and games” declined for Hasbro by 6% to $364.7 million. However, apparently during a conference call with industry analysts, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner mentioned Magic: the Gathering by name, singling it out as one of the Hasbro brands that is doing well, saying: “Taking a closer look at our overall third quarter results, we had several Hasbro brands perform well and contribute to our overall growth. Baby Alive, My Little Pony, Magic the Gathering, and Transformers, including the new KRE-O-branded products, all continued their growth trends in the quarter.”

Hasbro’s net income for the quarter rose to $171 million or $1.27 per share, which was below the $1.31 that analysts had forecast, marking the fourth consecutive quarter in which Hasbro had failed to meet the Street’s expectations.
