October 25, 2011 Comments off

Wizards of the Coast has announced a change to their release schedule for the Magic Duel Deck products, reported by ICv2.com. Starting with the release of Duel Deck: Koth Vs. Venser, the planeswalker v. planeswalker Duel Deck products will be released every spring while the faction v. faction Duel Deck products will be released every October. Duel Decks: Koth vs. Venser is designed by WotC R&D members Chris Millar and Mark Gottlieb.  They include two premium foil, alternate art mythic-rare Planeswalker cards and two 60-card decks.  Koth looks to Venser to help defend Mirrodin against Phyrexia, and the players recreate the struggle to save Mirrodin.

“Magic” & “Transformers” Help Hasbro

October 18, 2011 Comments off

Hasbro, parent company of Wizards of the Coast – makers of popular collectible card game Magic the Gathering – reports that its third quarter profit is up 10% compared to the same time period a year ago, according to ICv2.com. However, while sales were reportedly off by 7% in the United States and Canada, stronger international sales provided the revenue for such growth.

It seems these latest earnings reports were driven by two things: Transformers and Magic: the Gathering. Sales for Hasbro’s “Toys for Boys” category grew by 15% and reached $534.6 million on the strength of Transformers and the Marvel Studios toys from both Thor and Captain America. Meanwhile, sales for the “Toys for Girls” category declined by 4% to $259.1 million.

Additionally, sales of “puzzles and games” declined for Hasbro by 6% to $364.7 million. However, apparently during a conference call with industry analysts, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner mentioned Magic: the Gathering by name, singling it out as one of the Hasbro brands that is doing well, saying: “Taking a closer look at our overall third quarter results, we had several Hasbro brands perform well and contribute to our overall growth. Baby Alive, My Little Pony, Magic the Gathering, and Transformers, including the new KRE-O-branded products, all continued their growth trends in the quarter.”

Hasbro’s net income for the quarter rose to $171 million or $1.27 per share, which was below the $1.31 that analysts had forecast, marking the fourth consecutive quarter in which Hasbro had failed to meet the Street’s expectations.

Magic Innistrad Prerelease Attendances Up

October 5, 2011 Comments off

Wizards of the Coast has announced, according to ICv2.com, that attendances for the Innistrad prerelease events was up 32% overall, when compared to the Scars of Mirrodin prerelease. The total number of events was likewise up 14%, according to WotC.

Innistrad has thus far generated fantastic buzz. For example, just on our blog alone, unique pages view was up exponentially while the set was being previewed and spoiled by readers hungry for information about this new set. In addition, Innistrad has it’s fair share of fun, interesting looking cards as well (all for sale on TJ Collectibles Online!).

It’s likely too, that recent changes to the Magic organized play program way also be a factor (a la Planeswalker Points), which encourages people to play as much Magic as they can in order to earn as many points as possible. The new program also highly encourages strongly, more highly-ranked players to play more since they can no long “sit on their rating.”
